View from the overnight bus, nearing Nice
Our Airbnb in Nice
(I’m writing this on the evening of January 1st). We have had a long day, due to the fact that we had another overnight bus ride, this time from Trieste to Nice. We’re in our last Airbnb of the trip, in Antibes. It's fitting that we are ending our vacation in Antibes, where Orion spent his whole semester.
Antibes Promenade
This apartment is not as nice as our spot in Ljubljana. Although it’s less clean, it's right in the center of town, and so is very conveniently located).
So, to recount the end of our Flixbus ride:
Nomad Sculpture by Jaume Plensa, Antibes
Once again, in a blur, I watched the sunrise over the Mediterranean. We were stopped at the border, and everybody’s passports were checked by the Gendarme.
And then, suddenly, we were back in Nice! Orion and I remained so we could retrieve his two bags at the restaurant, where he had stashed them; Paige and Phoenix hopped on the train to Antibes, where the plan was for them to check into the Airbnb Orion had reserved.
So Orion and I got his bags, got some coffee at Starbucks, and then went back to the train station where we could also get to Antibes. We ended up chatting with a Croatian fellow who spoke fluent English, who spent the remainder of our trip telling us all about his Motogucci and Vespa motorcycles. He had lived in the United States when younger, and was familiar with ski towns in Colorado.
Once we finally reached Antibes and had hauled Orion’s bags to the city center where the airBnB was, we found Paige disgruntled about the state of our apartment.
I eventually left for some some solo time, attempting a sketch of the boardwalk, and also walked down the waterfront to examine a cool sculpture called the Nomad, an eight-meter high sculpture of a squatting figure, made of interconnected letters, designed by Barcelona sculptor Jaume Plensa. The light and shadow of the later afternoon sun created dynamic contrasts with the sculpture.
The excitement this morning: Orion and Phoenix left to go get some croissants and found the power out and the door to the outside alley completely locked. Orion took the lock apart, thankfully. I worried that something like that could be a death trap, if there was a fire; but now it's working. Why was the power out? the owner forgot to pay the power bill!

Today, we’re making a visit to the Picasso Museum, and tomorrow, we leave back for the U.S.

Paige and I got ‘to go’ dinners at a local store that we walked to and ate in the room.
