Issue #268 Boulder to Houston, July 15, 2024

We’re sitting on a plane bound for Houston, where Orion and I are traveling in order to get a visa for his upcoming semester in France.
Why do we have to travel to Texas to get a French Visa? Because Houston is the closest location we can receive this important document!
This is a good opportunity for Orion and I to spend some time together, before he launches off into this new chapter of his life.
The plains below us are dry and hazy as we chart a southeast path down to the Gulf of Mexico. Just last week, in this region a tornado blew down power lines and caused widespread outages. We worried the devastation would impact our Visa appointment, but it seemed that things were getting back to normal, so here we go!
We got up at 2 am and were on the road by 2:40. Phoenix made chocolate chip cookies last night and left some on the table for us.
Paige will be camping on her own at the Gore Creek Campground, near Vail. We were going to take that trip together, until the need arose for someone to accompany Orion to Houston. Phoenix will be the only one at home for a few days!

(The above haiku written after Orion realized his set of passport photos was in the door of one of the Intrepid company cars, which he had been using. We stopped by to retrieve the photos, but he couldn't find the key to open the door, so we left without them).
