Can you believe it? For awhile I was really into drawing rocks, and I'll tell you why: the surface of a rock, when you get right down into it, is just as fascinating and beautiful as the side of a magnificent mountain, etched over the milennia by the elements. I started drawing rocks as a meditation on the beauty of geology, and completed eight drawings over a period of about four years.
For these drawings I used the pen-and-ink stipple technique; dot by dot. They took a LONG TIME to draw...

This rock I found while on a backpacking trip in the Truchas Peaks wilderness in New Mexico. I finished the drawing while living in Boulder during the late 80's.

This particular drawing I worked out over a series of months, usually between the hours of 5:30 and 7:00 a.m. before I went to my landscaping job in Concord, California. I had little time to devote to art, and so by drawing these rocks I felt in touch with the natural world.

Drawn in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I lived while attending school in 1985. This drawing began the current series.

This rock was collected from the Sangre de Christo Range in New Mexico.

This one's almost a pebble.

A trinity of rocks.
